FLORIGAN

Recounting The Recount

Thu. May 1, 2008

An estimated 300 FL Dems protested outside the DNC headquarters 4/30 to try and "reverse a months-old decision to deny the state a say" in the Dem race, calling on DNC Chair Howard Dean to count the results of the state's 1/29 primary.

DNC spokesperson Luis Miranda "told the protesters that 'there will be representation from Florida in Denver'.... He did not elaborate."

Speakers at the protest "brought back memories of the state's problems at the polls," namely the Florida Recount. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), a supporter of Hillary Clinton, was one of those speakers. Wasserman Schultz: "We've been through eight long years of trying to restore the voters' confidence in the state of Florida. Our nerves are very raw from the Florida recount in 2000. We are not going to allow our voters to be disenfranchised again."

FL resident Yvonne Linsinbigler: "Florida has had enough humiliation. We're not here to favor one candidate over another. It's just making sure Florida's votes are counted, this time as well as in the future" (Matthews, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, 5/1).
