Not Even The Pope Is Spared
"Even though he attended" the birthday reception for Pope Benedict XVI this week, Tom Tancredo "was not happy with Benedict -- at all" over his comments on welcoming more immigrants to the U.S. Tancredo: "I fail to see how accepting more refugees than any other nation -- and providing free health care, education, housing and social service benefits to millions of illegal aliens is in any way 'violent' or 'degrading.'" Tancredo also said it's not part of Benedict's "job description to engage in American politics" (Akers, "The Sleuth," WashingtonPost.com, 4/17). Tancredo said Benedict was just trying to build up church membership by welcoming immigrants, saying, "This isn't preaching; it is faith-based marketing." Tancredo "was raised Catholic but now attends" an "evangelical Christian church" (Mulkern, Denver Post, 4/17).
