Reps. Eric Cantor (R-VA 07), Kevin McCarthy (R-CA 22) and Paul Ryan (R-WI 01), known collectively as the Young Guns, "are shooting forward with a plan to help like-minded GOP candidates and the cash-strapped, scandal-worn" NRCC. The "30-to-40-something swashbuckling trio" is targeting 17 challenger races and five open-seat contests. They're not supporting just young candidates, but those "who have fresh, new, formidable resumes," including: ex-Marine and RX exec. Tom Manion (R) who is running against Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA 08); ex-Senate staffer Pete Olson (R) who is running against Rep. Nick Lampson (D-TX 22) and ex-Rep. Melissa Hart (R) who is running against Rep. Jason Altmire (D-PA 04).
So far, nearly 50 GOP House members "have committed to donating a minimum" of $1K to each candidate on the list and many have also agreed "to hold at least one" DC fundraiser for a candidate. In "his usual ebullient, guns-blazin' style," McCarthy said: "We're going on offense. We're supporting those candidates who have shown that they are dedicated to conservative values and a commitment to rebuilding the Republican Party" (Crabtree, The Hill, 4/28).
