Hillary Clinton 4/28 "accepted a weekly newspaper publisher's invitation to participate in a Lincoln-Douglas debate in Missoula.

Clinton: "Montanans deserve a chance to hear where Senator Obama and I stand on important issues that matter to them before they cast their votes in June." Obama MT spokesperson Matt Chandler "said Obama has participated in 21 debates, including four nationally televised one-on-one debates with Clinton." Chandler: "We're still evaluating the debate offer and are considering the context of our number one priority, which is making sure the Senator is able to have a direct conversation with Montanans on issues important to them."

The idea came from Fort Clark Chronicle publisher John Murray, who in a 2/27 column called for a Lincoln-Douglas style debate in MT in mid-May. His newspaper, circulation 3K, covers western Missoula Co. and Mineral Co. (Johnson, Billings Gazette, 4/29).

Election 2012 – Managing Alternatives

5:06 p.m.

In politics, the language of choice often comes loaded. School choice. Abortion rights. Public option. Proponents embrace these descriptions to put the best possible face on otherwise contentious issues. This was one of the weeks when the politics of alternatives defined the debate.
