Govs-R-Us

McCain makes his first post-election appearance today, for Chambliss in GA. But as has been the case for much of WH'08, it's his ex-running mate who's drawing the spotlight.

In Miami this a.m., Palin chastised the media for paying too much attention to the past ('08) and the way-off future ('12). Instead, she says, she and her colleagues are focused on '10. That's good news for us, 'cause we are too. Here's what we can expect on the GOV front next cycle:

--There are 36 govs up in '10; Dems hold 20, GOPers hold 16. Thanks to term limits, there will be 18+ open seats. The GOP has to worry most about CA, RI and HI. While Dems have to defend red-state open seats like AZ, OK, TN and WY.

-- Each party has its own scandal-plagued incumbent. Dems have IL's Blago; GOPers have NV's Gibbons. The first question, of course, is whether either will run again.

-- The first test as to whether Pres.-elect Obama's '08 success translates to downballot Dems will be next year. Can Dems really keep the VA gov's mansion blue a third straight time?

Quote of the Day

"I hope Senator Stevens is successful in being re-elected. And assuming that he is, I intend to support any motion to remove him."

— Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), Atlanta Journal Constitution, 11/12.
