Finding New Ammo?

The volume and quantity of debate on social issues has been lowered this cycle, particularly in House races. Will the SCOTUS decision to overturn the DC handgun ban reignite those debates?

-- The NRCC was quick to attack Dems who sit in marginal CDs, including Carol Shea-Porter (NH 01) and John Yarmuth (KY 03), for being out-of-step w/their CDs on guns. But the other Dems targeted by the cmte, including Bruce Braley (IA 01) and Ed Perlmutter (CO 07) don't really have strong re-election struggles. That shows just how deep the NRCC has to dig to find Dems who don't support gun rights.

-- In the past decade, most vulnerable Dems have taken the issue off the table and now strongly support gun rights. Atty Bob Lord (D), running an uphill but surprisingly strong race against John Shadegg (R-AZ 03), was quick to praise SCOTUS's ruling this a.m. And Zack Space (D-OH 18) has even earned the NRA's endorsement.

-- As the country has moved on this issue, so have many cong. Dems, making it more difficult for GOPers to peg them as out-of-touch. But even against Reps. in CDs where they can exploit it, will $4+/gallon gas and a recession trump guns?
