How Low Can You Go?

It's predictable that the GOP would begin a circular firing squad after their 5/3 loss in LA-06. But the depressed state of some Members and newspapers vetting potential leadership replacements shows just how low the GOP psyche is. All of which makes MS-01 a must win on 5/13.

-- It's hard to imagine how a win in a Cook PVI-rated R+10 CD would be of any relief to GOPers, but in this environment, it'd be a lifesaver. The MS special is the last big chance before the summer recess for the GOP to change the '08 storyline. And they know it. Unlike in LA-06 and IL-14, the nat'l party appears to be getting behind Southaven Mayor Greg Davis (R), who will get a visit by VP Cheney (R). NRCC Chair Tom Cole (R) is beating the drums for Members' cash.

-- Already, it appears the NRCC's excuse about the flawed LA and IL candidates, however accurate, is wearing thin among the GOP conference. And Cole's "on your own" declarations may only add to the anxiety. There are 18 states that have filing deadlines after the MS-01 special. A new round of GOP retirements isn't out of the question following yet another loss.

-- As we've written before, MS-01 is a no-excuses election. Davis is competent; the black pop., for the South, is relatively low, and the CD is solidly GOP. A loss could be devastating. If not to the big picture, then at least to the party's morale.
