Cashing Out

This isn't Vegas, guys. So let's get away from the debate about the over/under for Obama and HRC in PA. It doesn't matter how close Obama comes to winning, or how big HRC's margin among the shot-and-beer bowlers will be. The only thing that really matters is if Obama can cut into HRC's base. Running up the score in the leafy Main Line suburbs doesn't really count.

-- For HRC, it's not about the margin. It's about the money, and she doesn't have much. Will her fundraising pitch be better received if she wins by 10 pts instead of 5 or 6? And will Obama's small donors stop clicking his website if he can't close the deal? Both seem unlikely. Taking out another $5M loan means little when Obama can spend that much on TV in a week.

-- For superdels still waiting for a "safe" choice to emerge, well, don't hold your breath. It's not likely that Obama's showing today will put to rest concerns about whether he can carry the Rust Belt in 11/08. And, HRC won't suddenly become less polarizing.

And, so, it's back to money. Obama's got it and HRC doesn't. In the end, that's how this race will likely end.

Quote of the Day

"I'm not running around saying I'm the world's most positive human being. I'm running around saying I'm a problem solver."

— Hillary Clinton, "Early Show," CBS, 4/22

DIGGING OUT OF THE GRAND CANYON

If Dems are able to pick up AZ-01 this year, they would have a 5-3 hold on AZ's House delegation, their first majority since holding 2 of AZ's 3 seats back in 1966.
