Searching
NationalJournal.com's search engine allows you to enter search terms in several different ways. None of the available search options are case-sensitive. The default is to search for all words. Therefore, the following search:
... produces a list of items that include both "President" AND "Bush"
Other Search Options
The other search options, which are available from the Advanced Search pages, include:
- Any of the words (OR) -- produces a list of items that include either "President" OR "Bush"
- Exact phrase -- produces a list of items that include the phrase "President Bush"
- Advanced (Boolean) -- allows the search query to include various advanced search terms.
Searching By Date
Quick searches search across all dates and display the most recent items first. On each publication's Advanced Search page, however, you may narrow your search to a certain date range.
NOTE: Publication archives are date-searchable, as are the Markup Report and Ad Spotlight archives through their respecive Advanced Search pages. Other NationalJournal.com features, however, are not archived by date.

Q: How can I narrow down the number of results I'm getting?
Use at least two or three search terms. By using more keywords to narrow your search, you can locate documents that fit your information needs more precisely. You can also use the Advanced (Boolean) search option.
Q: Why can't I access the stories from some publications?
Although any NationalJournal.com
member can search all the National Journal Group publications, actual stories from each publication's archives are restricted to that publication's subscribers only. Q: How do I search by date?
Only the publication archives are date-searchable; NationalJournal.com
features are not archived by date. To search the archives of one or more publications by date, use the Advanced Search page for a publication to which you subscribe.
Q: What can be searched?
The archives of National Journal magazine and each daily publication are fully searchable, by keyword and by date.
In addition, all of NationalJournal.com's features can be searched by keyword. However, most of these features are not date-searchable. The main search engine covers most of NationalJournal.com, while the Daybook has a separate search page.
Advanced (Boolean) Search Terms
Boolean terms allow you create complex searches. Remember: To use any Boolean terms, you must first select Advanced (Boolean) from the "Search For" menu.

Only pages containing all the terms listed will produce a successful result. For example, Congress AND budget will return results with both the term Congress and the term budget in the pages.

Only pages containing any of the terms listed will produce a successful result. For example, Congress OR budget will return pages that contain either the term Congress or the term budget (or both).

| ANDNOT |
ANDNOT will search for records that contain the query term that precedes it but do not contain the term that follows it. For example, searching for Speaker ANDNOT Hastert will produce documents related to any House Speaker except Dennis (or any other) Hastert.

In Boolean searches, quotation marks are used to denote exact phrases. For example, a search on "New York Times" will match only documents containing those words as an exact phrase. It will not find pages with the words used in different orders, such as "Good times in New York City."

Use an asterisk to find pages containing words that begin or end with the same letters. For example, a search for comput* would return pages containing words like "compute," "computer" and "computation."
