The NFL Wants Your Blood

For a good cause, of course.

Donating blood has many benefits. You can help save lives. You get free juice and cookies. And, if you live in New York City, New Jersey, or Long Island, you could get free tickets to the Super Bowl.

The contest, created through a partnership between tristate-area donation centers and the New York/New Jersey Super Bowl Host Committee, kicked off in the spring and remains open until Jan. 17. The winning blood may already be out there, trapped inside a vial, waiting for its former owner to find out whether he or she has won two seats at next year's Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium in New York, the first played outdoors in a cold-weather city.

All donors receive a "Super Community Blood Drive" wristband. It's inevitable that some of the people who agree to a needle prick are just doing it for the tickets. But for an organization that is almost tyrannically focused on maintaining a clean image, such as the NFL, capitalizing on the goodness of people's hearts is not such a bad idea.
