Premium Deadlines

Obamacare deadlines have shifted a fair amount since the Oct. 1 launch to deal with website problems and other hiccups. To be covered in the new year, consumers must both enroll through the exchange and pay the premium to their insurance company.

While the deadline in most states to enroll in coverage beginning Jan. 1 is Dec. 23, many insurers have extended premium payment deadlines past the first of the year, to give consumers a bit more time. For the 36 states on the federal exchange, the new deadline to pay premiums for coverage beginning Jan. 1 is Jan. 10. The 14 states (plus the District of Columbia) that are running their own exchanges have different premium deadlines, ranging from Dec. 23 to Jan. 15.
