Administration May Extend Obamacare Deadline to March 31

However, this is not the delay of the individual mandate which some legislators have asked for.

The Affordable Care Act requires all Americans to have health insurance or be subject to a tax penalty, known as the individual mandate.

In order to avoid the penalty for not having insurance, individuals must sign up for health coverage by Feb. 15.

That date may change, however, as the administration is currently working to extend that deadline until the end of the open enrollment period, which is Oct. 1 through March 31.

"There is a disconnect between the open enrollment and individual responsibility time frames in the first year only," a Department of Health and Human Services official said. "The administration is working to align those policies and will issue guidance soon. This guidance will ensure that if you sign up for insurance by the end of March, you will not face a penalty."

For clarification, this is not the delay of the individual mandate which some legislators have asked for, which was a one-year delay until 2015--the same delay granted to employers earlier this year.
