Obamacare Enrollment Poised to Spike

Obamacare Enrollment Poised to Spike

The people who will benefit most from Obamacare haven't signed up yet, according to a new analysis from the consulting firm Avalere Health. That's good news for the White House--it's another concrete sign that there's still plenty of room for enrollment to improve.

Only about 30 percent of the people who signed up for insurance in October were eligible for subsidies to help pay for their premiums, Avalere said. By contrast, it ultimately expects that roughly 80 percent of all enrollees will be subsidized--so there's a long way to go to reach the administration's target audience.

This is partly why the White House and its allies have put their marketing campaigns on hold until January--the most aggressive public-relations push needs to coincide with a vastly improved website. Avalere's analysis backs up the administration's reasoning. If subsidy-eligible people aren't trying to enroll now, it makes a lot of sense to believe that enrollment is due for a major spike down the road.
