Protesters Storm French Atomic Power Site

July 15, 2013

France's Tricastin atomic energy facility on Monday was targeted by more than two dozen Greenpeace protesters, who cleared perimeter fencing in a move aimed at revealing the site's susceptibility to a potential attacker, Reuters reported.

Greenpeace France atomic head Yannick Rousselet said the group wants French President Francois Hollande "to close the Tricastin plant, which is among the five most dangerous in France."

"If being physically able to touch the reactors is not being in a sensitive place, I don't know what is," Rousselet said. "People with bad intentions could have posed a threat to the reactor's safety."

French utility EDF, though, said the intruders had not reached any "sensitive areas." By early afternoon, most of the activists had been arrested but several could still be seen hanging onto ladders and other building features.
