The Washington chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists on Tuesday recognized Global Security Newswire for 2013 online investigative journalism.
A series of articles by Senior Reporter Douglas P. Guarino was named a finalist in the group’s annual Washington Dateline Awards. The articles revealed that new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for nuclear-disaster response could weaken public health protections, despite the agency's public statements to the contrary.
SPJ judges said “Guarino's excellent reporting pulled back the curtain with which EPA shrouded itself and freed the facts.” This was the second journalism honor Guarino received since joining GSN in 2012.
This article was published in Global Security Newswire, which is produced independently by National Journal Group under contract with the Nuclear Threat Initiative. NTI is a nonprofit, nonpartisan group working to reduce global threats from nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons.
