Shortly before he was scheduled to appear live on C-SPAN, former South Dakota Sen. George McGovern tripped and fell, hitting his head, USA Today reports. McGovern was flown from Mitchell, S.D., where the accident occurred, to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
McGovern, a Democrat, was planning to discuss his 1972 presidential campaign against Richard Nixon as part of a C-SPAN series profiling presidential candidates who lost, but who influenced the nation's history. McGovern was walking to the set at Dakota Wesleyan University just before 7 p.m. central time when he stumbled.
"About 10 feet from the door he slipped and fell and hit his head," said Don Simmons, executive director of the McGovern Center at the university. He said the fall was not just "a minor spill" and "he was bleeding pretty heavily."
Ann, McGovern's daughter, said, "It could be very serious."
