Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates will become an administrator at the College of William and Mary, the school announced on Tuesday.
Gates, a 1965 graduate of William and Mary, will serve as the college's chancellor. He was also an administrator at Texas A&M.
"In Bob, one of our nation’s oldest colleges has found one of our nation’s finest public servants," President Obama said in a statement on Tuesday.
Gates's appointment as chancellor comes a day after another recently departed Pentagon official, former spokesman Geoff Morrell, was named the head of communications for embattled oil giant BP America.
