Fitch Will Put U.S. Credit Rating on "Watch Negative" if Debt Ceiling Not Raised in Time

A senior executive with ratings agency Fitch said the company would put the United States' credit rating on watch negative if the federal government does not raise the debt ceiling by August 2, Reuters is reporting.

"If we reach the second of August without a lifting of the debt ceiling, Fitch would assign a rating watch negative to the U.S. sovereign ratings," said Andrew Colquhoun, head of Asia-Pacific sovereign ratings with Fitch.

While the United States has its borrowing limit, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has said the government can take extraordinary measures to avoid defaulting on its debt until August 2.
