Biofuels Mandate: Defend, Reform, or Repeal

Wednesday, October 9, 2013 8:00 AM - 10:30 AM

Newseum, Knight Broadcast Studio - Third Floor | 555 Pennsylvania Avenue N.W. | Washington, DC 20001

With a goal of weaning the nation's cars off foreign oil, Congress created the renewable fuel standard in 2005. This mandate requires increasingly large amounts of biofuels each year to be blended with gasoline. As most of the mandate is currently met with corn-produced ethanol, last summer's drought sent corn prices soaring and caused the mandate to come under intense bipartisan scrutiny.

National Journal's Amy Harder opened the event with a keynote interview with Iowa's Republican Representative, Steve King. Following that was a second keynote interview with Vermont's At-Large Democrat, Peter Welch. The event concluded with a panel discussion, also moderated by Amy Harder, featuring Paul Beckwith, chief executive officer of Butamax Advanced Biofuels; Michael Brower, interim president & chief, executive officer, American Council On Renewable Energy (ACORE); Rob Green, executive director, National Council of Chain Restaurants; Kris Kiser, president & chief executive officer, Outdoor Power Equipment Institute, Inc.; Peter Lehner, executive director, Natural Resources Defense Council; and Damon Wells, vice president, government affairs, National Turkey Federation.
