Utility company Hawaiian Electric has put in a request to the state Public Utilities Commission to construct the largest solar-energy project in the state, the Associated Press reports.

The project would encompass 15-megawatts of solar-generating capacity over 50 acres. SolarCity, a solar-power provider, would be contracted to install and construct the photovoltaic plant.

"This is a unique opportunity that benefits our customers because it allows us to quickly develop more low-cost clean energy," said Ron Cox, Hawaiian Electric's vice president of power supply.
