Keystone Project Director Blames GOP for Project Delays

Les Cherwenuk, director of TransCanada's Keystone XL pipeline project, said Wednesday that a major reason the pipeline has been subject to delays is because Republicans passed a measure to compel an executive branch decision on the pipeline in 2012, Fuel Fix reports.

At the time, President Obama said he did not have enough information about the pipeline's environmental impact and had to deny the permit on that basis, Cherwenuk argued. "He couldn't [approve it] fundamentally, since the work had not been completed and he had no choice but to deny the permit," he said at an event organized by Hart Energy in Houston.

This prompted TransCanada to submit a new application for Keystone XL approval, in effect restarting the permitting process, Cherwenuk said.
