The Dow opened lower on Monday, following declines in Asia and Europe and concerns about the United States being unable to raise its debt ceiling.
The decline followed drops in US currency value and a rise in gold to another record.
Minutes after the opening bell, the Dow lost more than 125 points, falling to 12,555, according to real-time data. The loss was expected, in part because U.S. lawmakers failed to reach a debt agreement during budget negotiations over the weekend.
In Asia, Japan's Nikkei average closed 0.8 percent down, as Hong Kong’s Hang Seng dipped 0.7 percent. The Shanghai Composite fell 3.0 percent.
