Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced Tuesday morning that President Obama has followed his recommendation to appoint Christine Fox as acting deputy Defense secretary.

"I am grateful that she has agreed to return to the Department of Defense, pending the nomination and confirmation of a permanent successor to Deputy Secretary [Ashton] Carter," Hagel said in a statement. Fox will start Thursday. She was previously at the Defense Department as the director of Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation but left the Pentagon earlier this year.

Hagel said that because of Fox's experience, "she will be able to help me shape our priorities from day one," adding that Fox "knows the intricacies of the department's budget, programs, and global operations better than anyone."

Carter is leaving the department Wednesday.

A senior Defense official told Foreign Policy that they are "getting close" to making a final decision on a permanent replacement for the position of deputy Defense secretary.
