Dunn is one of the Tom Daschle alumni now serving the Obama administration. As a political consultant, she has spent most of her career on the campaign side of politics, not on the what-to-do-now-in-office side. She turned down an initial offer to work in the White House, but when Ellen Moran left the communications job in April to move to the Commerce Department, the president asked again and this time Dunn couldn't refuse, at least for the time being. She's holding the job until a permanent pick can be made. Dunn, a University of Maryland grad, also worked for Bill Bradley's presidential campaign in 2000 and for Obama's rival in Illinois's 2004 Senate primary, among others. Obama grew to rely on her advice after she joined his political action committee in 2006. Associates say she believes that politicians succeed not so much by framing the issues but by relating vivid personal narratives.
