2013 White House / The White House

David Agnew, Director, Intergovernmental Affairs

July 17, 2013

Agnew was an early supporter of Obama, serving as cochairman of his 2008 campaign in South Carolina. As director of intergovernmental affairs, a position he's held since 2012, Agnew oversees the administration's relationship with state, county, local, and tribal officials across the nation. His job involves working with "hundreds of mayors across the country," as Agnew once put it. In 2009, Agnew, a 1990 graduate of Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and a 1988 graduate of Erskine College in South Carolina, was tapped to become deputy director of intergovernmental affairs. In that role, one of his responsibilities was to help keep local communities informed about the federal stimulus program and how money would trickle down to them. Agnew, a native of Anderson County, S.C., previously served in the Clinton administration as a special assistant in the office of then-Labor Secretary Robert Reich. He was the head of a real-estate-consulting group and was also a management consultant at Price Waterhouse. Before coming to the White House, he served for about a decade as a senior aide to Charleston, S.C., Mayor Joe Riley Jr. Agnew is considered a potential successor to Riley, who will not seek reelection in 2016. Agnew's office is in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building adjacent to the West Wing. "There isn't a single day that goes by in the White House that I don't pause and appreciate this special opportunity," he once said.
