Wisconsin Democrats to Reveal Plan to Recall Gov. Walker

June 3, 2011

The odds may be stacked against them, but Wisconsin Democrats are ready to announce a plan to recall union-busting, collective-bargaining stripping Gov. Scott Walker from office. At The Washington Post, Greg Sargent obtained excerpts from Democratic chairman Mark Tate's speech prior to the party convention tonight, and here's what Tate plans to say:

"We will not stand down — and next year, we will recall Scott Walker from office...We will begin to repair the damage done to this state and we will begin a new with a Democratic Governor who will fight for our children, who will fight for our families, our teachers and our firefighters. We will fight for the people — not the powerful."

Right now, the details are pretty slim, the rhetoric a little vague, and the challenges numerous: Democrats have no candidate yet and have to mount a statewide campaign to gather 540,000 signatures in 60 days. Sargent, however, has a hunch the party is eying Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett to be their choice, which seems to fit well with the his pointed email remark yesterday that hinted at the opportunity:

"If Scott Walker continues to act like a king instead of a governor, nine months from now – no matter whom we choose to be our nominee – we will be out there working together and we will make Scott Walker listen," Barrett [said].
