The FBI arrested a Baltimore man Wednesday for attempting to bomb a
military recruiting station in Cantonsville Maryland. According to The Washington Post,
Antonio Martinez, also known as Muhammad Hussein, had been unknowingly
plotting with undercover agents who supplied him with the fake bomb he
tried to detonate today. As the Associated Press
points out, today's arrest resembles another recent FBI-controlled
dummy bombing plotted with an Oregon teen seeking to blow up a large
crowd at a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in Portland. The recent
string of sting operations continues to receive mixed responses,
including criticism by some that the FBI is unfairly entrapping Muslims in fabricated terror plots.
- An FBI Success Ed Morrissey at Hot Air praises the FBI's efforts to curb terrorist attacks by intercepting them before they happen. "One thing to keep in mind: it's exceedingly difficult to discover plots by single actors working entirely alone. The FBI's recent catches of several would-be-bombers is a good sign that they have penetrated some communications efforts by jihadis." Thus, he says, "assuming the allegations are supported by evidence, that's a good sign, and a job well done on their end."
- These Sting Operations Could Be Counterproductive The Guardian's Wajahat Ali refers to the manner in which the teen in Oregon (and now the Baltimore man) were arrested as "reflective of the FBI's myopic strategy of using glitzy, expensive sting operations and dubious confidential informants to further erode Muslim American relations instead of concentrating on effective partnerships to combat radicalization."
- Add It to the List Michelle Malkin responds to the news of today's arrest with a post linking back to all of her own comments on previous terror plots in the Baltimore area and a promise to add Hussein's mugshot to her "jihadi gallery". She ends the post by telling readers, "remember: if it's Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, it's just another day in the life of a true believer in violent jihad."
