American voters may be in a firing mood.

Underscoring widespread discontent with all political leaders, registered voters now divide almost exactly in half on whether President Obama and the Republican majority in the House of Representatives each deserve another term in power, according to the latest United Technologies/National Journal Congressional Connection poll.

Asked what outcome they would prefer in the 2012 presidential election, 44 percent of registered voters said they would like to see a Republican elected, while 42 percent want Obama to win a second term—a finding within the survey’s margin of error.

Asked if Republicans should retain control of the House, 41 percent said yes and 43 percent said they would prefer Democrats to recapture the majority—also within the poll’s error margin.

When the results of both questions are combined, 35 percent say they want Obama to win reelection and Democrats to retake the House, while 34 percent say they want Republicans to capture the White House and hold the House. The rest splinter into combinations of divided control or don’t know.

Thinking about the 2012 elections, which of the following outcomes would you prefer... Would you rather see Barack Obama re-elected next year, OR a Republican win the presidency?
