Convention Insiders Poll

How much does your party’s chance of winning the presidential election hinge on having a successful convention?

Republicans (176 VOTES)

Very important    15%
Somewhat important    51%
Not very important    31%
Not at all important    3%

Very important:

“This frames the next 10 weeks. We need to do this well.”

Somewhat important:

“The convention can sharpen the focus for Romney-Ryan, but it’s only a kick-starter. Few swing voters tune into the convention.”

“Gov. Romney needs to work on liability factor; this could be a good start.”
Somewhat important: “A good convention can’t win an election, but a poor one can lose it.”

“Romney needs to build an image tarnished by the Obama blitz.”

“The nominee’s speech sets a tone and matters a lot; nothing else matters even a little bit.”

Not very important:

“It will be forgotten by the second week of September.”

“Just one opportunity of many. When we didn’t have social media, it was much more important—and when we didn’t have 500 cable channels.”

“This election is about jobs and the economy.”

“Conventions are two weeks of predictable news two months before undecided voters make up their minds.”

This article appears in the August 28, 2012 edition of NJ Convention Daily.
