TELECOM AFFAIRS. The United States Telecom Association has hired Alan Roth to be the group's senior executive vice president. Roth will act as deputy to USTelecom CEO Walter McCormick Jr. in directing government affairs. Roth was a longtime aide for the House Energy and Commerce Committee, having started there as counsel and eventually serving as staff director and chief counsel under House Energy and Commerce Chairman John Dingell as well as minority counsel from 1995-1997. Roth merged his solo lobbying practice with Lent & Scrivner in 2000 to form Lent Scrivner & Roth LLC. Before he embarked on his solo lobbying career, he was a partner in Bryan Cave LLP.

PARENTAL CONTROLS. Microsoft has hired Caroline Curtin to serve as policy counsel for interactive entertainment, where she will, among other issues, work on parental controls and game ratings, as well as environment and energy sustainability. She will be based in the firm's government affairs office in Washington. Curtin has worked for Revolution Health, AOL and as a lawyer for the FTC's advertising practices division.

NUMBER ONE. The National Emergency Number Association has hired Brian Fontes as its chief executive officer. Fontes has served as the vice president for federal relations for AT&T Services and vice president for federal relations for Cingular Wireless. He has served as the senior vice president for policy and administration at the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association, as chief of staff for the FCC, and as senior adviser to former FCC Commissioner James Quello.

MOVING UP. Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., has hired Alexandria (Allie) Judson, a former intern and native of Camp's district, to be his staff assistant.
