People. Former Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., is being treated for papillary thyroid cancer, the Associated Press reported. Wilson said it is the most common type of thyroid cancer and has a cure rate of more than 90 percent. She will have surgery to remove the thyroid gland, followed several weeks later by radioactive iodine. Wilson served in the House from 1998 until she unsuccessfully sought the Senate nomination in 2008.
