Bill Would Reimburse Vets For Emergency Health Care
The House Veterans Affairs Committee passed a bill Wednesday allowing veterans to be reimbursed for any emergency medical care.
The bill sponsored by Rep. Zack Space, D-Ohio, would require the VA to reimburse veterans for emergency treatment received in a non-VA medical facility until being transferred to a VA facility.
It would also require reimbursement for veterans with service-related disabilities seeking emergency treatment or a non-service related disability that aggravates a service-related disability. A committee aide said an example would be non-service related high blood pressure aggravating a heart condition that developed due to military service.
Joseph Wilson, the American Legion's deputy director for Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Commission, said the bill would help prevent delays in treating life-threatening injuries or illnesses for veterans that do not live near VA facilities.
