House Panel Mulls Revamping GI Bill

Thu. May 1, 2008

The House Veterans Affairs Committee passed a measure Wednesday to modernize the GI Bill even as the panel's top Republican predicted the bill would clash with the Senate's version.

The bill sponsored by Veterans Affairs Economic Opportunity Subcommittee Chairwoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, D-S.D., includes provisions that would allow veterans to use benefits for different kinds of classes and would boost the amount of tuition covered to 47 percent, she said, adding that she will seek the same benefits for members of the Reserves and the National Guard in a separate bill.

Veterans Affairs ranking member Steve Buyer praised the legislation, but warned the Senate wants a "completely different style" of bill because it does not follow the same pay/go rules as the House. He anticipated the House version would be funded, while the Senate's would not be.

House Speaker Pelosi said Wednesday she hopes the House will take up the bill in the next few weeks.
