Justice Opens New Office To Handle FISA Requests
The Justice Department's National Security Division launched an Office of Intelligence this week, a reorganization driven in part by the increased number of investigative applications handled under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
The agency reported this week that since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the annual number of requests approved by the secret court charged with vetting the cases has risen from 934 to 2,370.
The increased workload forced the NSD to become more effective in preparing and submitting files to the court while ensuring that the applications are accurate and comply with federal privacy protections. The division's intelligence staff has grown from fewer than 20 lawyers in 2000 to almost 100 today.
