Inspector General Report Says Department Has Work To Do
The Labor Department must improve its grant writing, solicitation and award process under its High Growth Job Training Initiative to better ensure that the projects it funds meet their goals, according to a departmental Inspector General report released Wednesday.
Run by the department's Employment and Training Administration, the initiative helps prepare workers and increase their opportunities in high growth, high demand, and economically critical sectors of the economy.
Between 2001 and 2007, the initiative provided 133 grants to nonprofit and business groups, totaling about $235 million.
The report found that of the 59 objectives established for 10 grants scrutinized by the IG, 42 of the objectives were met, while 10 were not and seven were not clearly defined.
The report said while many projects were "pilot and demonstration grants which may not always be successful, objectives still need to be clearly articulated and measurable."
