Hoffa To House On FTAs: Let's Wait Until Next Year
The head of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters sent a three-page letter to House members late Tuesday urging them to oppose the Colombia Free Trade Agreement and the other pending FTAs with South Korea and Panama, arguing it was time to start fresh on trade policy next year with a new administration.
"Workers everywhere have had enough of these trade deals," wrote Teamsters General President James Hoffa. "We look forward to working with a new administration to implement a trade model that will create U.S. jobs and not send them overseas, and a new administration who will know the importance of working closely with governments through diplomatic means rather than just passing more bad trade deals."
Hoffa cites continuing violence against labor officials in Colombia, adding: "The fact that the Bush administration ever thought it was a good idea to negotiate an FTA with Colombia is another example of the little respect they have for labor rights and labor unions."
