AARP Outlines Priorities For FY09 Appropriations
The AARP Tuesday urged appropriators to provide at least $1 billion for four programs assisting the elderly in FY09, including $750 million for subsidized apartments and $200 million for a HUD counseling program.
The organization also wants $50 million to help FDA catch up on a backlog of generic drug applications and $5.1 million for an IRS counseling program.
More housing for seniors is critical, AARP senior vice president David Sloane said in a letter to leaders of House and Senate Appropriations subcommittees. "With the gap between supply and demand growing, 10 people lined up for each HUD Section 202 apartment that comes open," he said.
