Congressional Hopeful Ozinga Defends Business Practices
The Republican candidate seeking to replace New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann on the ballot in Illinois’ 11th District said Tuesday that he was proud of the work he has done to start a minority-owned spinoff from his concrete company, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Democrats, pointing to a 2005 investigation in Tribune, say the Martin Ozinga’s concrete firm exploited the program to gain contracts with the City of Chicago.
Ozinga denied any wrongdoing.
He said he started venture to create jobs and promote economic development in minority communities.
Republicans will meet April 30 to formally pick a replacement candidate for Baldermann, who abruptly withdrew from the contest to replace retiring GOP Rep. Jerry Weller.
The campaign of state Sen. Debbie Halvorson, the Democratic nominee, said there were still unanswered questions about Ozinga and his business practices.
