Oregon’s Merkley Loans His Senate Campaign $250,000
State House Speaker Jeff Merkley, a Democrat, has taken out a $250,000 loan on a residence he owns in Washington, D.C., to aid his bid for the seat held by Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., the Oregonian reported.
The money will be used to “communicate with Oregon voters,” according to his campaign. Merkley, who faces a competitive primary next month, announced the loan in a letter sent to supporters.
A spokesman for Merkley denied that the loan indicated the campaign was in trouble.
However, Democratic rival Steve Novick, an attorney, questioned the loan.
“It raises a real question,” said Jake Weigler, Novick’s campaign manager. “With all the support of the Democratic establishment in D.C., if Merkley has to borrow money to talk to voters, what chance does he have against Gordon Smith?”
