After Rep. Todd Akin, the Republican Senate nominee in Missouri, made controversial statements about “forcible rape” on Sunday, the FBI and the Capitol Police are investigating threats made against him, multiple news outlets reported on Thursday.
An anonymous official source was quoted by a St. Louis TV station as saying: “Multiple people have threatened rape and harm against Akin, his staff, and family.”
An Akin spokesperson confirmed the threats to USA Today, but would not provide further details. Akin’s comments have made him a pariah within his own party, and he will not attend the Republican National Convention next week in Tampa.
