Former Rhode Island Rep. Patrick Kennedy described Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s depression as “deep” Thursday after meeting with the Illinois congressman, according to the Associated Press.
Jackson, who checked into the Mayo Clinic earlier this month and whose diagnosis of bipolar disorder was announced earlier this week, had been on leave from the House since June.
“It was clear we both had the same feelings of dejection and self-doubt and being in a situation where we thought we had let people down and let ourselves down,” said Kennedy, who had also been treated for bipolar disorder at the Mayo Clinic.
Since his own public battle with mental health issues, Kennedy has become a public advocate and taught a course at Brown University on the subject.
