Congresswoman Grace Meng Attacked in D.C.

Rep. Grace Meng, D-N.Y., was attacked and robbed near Eastern Market in Washington Tuesday night, police tell ABC. An assailant reportedly hit the congresswoman over the head and took her Gucci handbag.

ABC reports that Meng was "left disoriented" and suffered injuries to her left knee, hand, face, and head. In a press statement, the congresswoman said that she was "not seriously injured."

Meng, a freshman, represents Queens, New York after taking the seat made vacant by former Rep. Gary Ackerman. She is the daughter of Taiwanese immigrants and is the first Asian-American woman to represent a borough of New York City in Congress. "It's nice to be a woman, and it's nice to be an Asian," she told National Journal soon before being elected last year. "But what's more important is what I can bring back to my district."

This violence only adds to a pretty awful week for the D.C. area.
