Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., on Thursday became the first member of House leadership to weigh in on Rep. Anthony Weiner’s Twitter controversy, calling for the New York Democrat to “come clean and clear it up.”
“I think the American people are sick of seeing their elected officials tied up in the scandals like this,” Cantor said on Fox and Friends. Earlier this year, Rep. Christopher Lee, R-N.Y., abruptly resigned after it was discovered that he sent a shirtless photo of himself to a stranger on Craigslist. “I really think it’s sad, and obviously there’s not a lot of clarity surrounding the reports” in Weiner’s case, Cantor continued.
Weiner’s attempt to clear the air Wednesday was met with even further skepticism when he would not rule out that the photo sent to a female college student from his Twitter account was of him. He has maintained that his account was hacked.
Cantor’s two cents? “My advice would be to come clean and clear it up. I mean, perhaps he’s trying, but I know there’s a lot of explaining going on without a lot of clarity,” Cantor said. “Think about his wife -- I mean, I’m really saddened for his wife, and I think they’ve only been married a short time.”
