Barry Jackson, House Speaker John Boehner’s chief of staff since 2010, is stepping down as chief and becoming a senior counselor. Deputy chief of staff Mike Sommers will take over.

“This is a planned transition," a source close to Boehner's office said.

The source said when Jackson agreed to return to the Boehner team following the death of Paula Nowakowski, he told Boehner he was happy to come back and help, but didn’t envision staying in the job forever.

"This move signals confidence in the Boehner operation that House Republicans will retain their majority," the source said.
