It took until nearly 1 a.m. Thursday morning, but the House Agriculture Committee was able to pass its Farm Bill 35-11 after a marathon markup.
The effort could present a way for the Farm Bill to become law before the current authorization expires Sept. 30, a proposition that just months ago seemed unlikely. But there’s still a major hurdle to overcome: getting the bill onto the House floor.
Ranking member Collin Peterson, D-Minn., seemed confident that it would get there. “I think the pressure will build and they’ll cave before the week we go on recess,” he said. “If they don’t, politically they’ll pay the price… In farm country, this bill is all they care about.”
