Former Kansas Senator Bob Dole was hospitalized at Walter Reed Hospital for unknown reasons Tuesday, CBS News reported.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., announced the hospitalization from the Senate floor, saying of Dole, 89, the GOP's nominee for president in 1996, "He is there because he is infirm. He is sick."

An unnamed assistant to Dole played down the seriousness of the hospitalization, telling CBS that the longtime Republican leader “checked in for a routine procedure and will discharge tomorrow.”
