A case involving former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards's alleged improper use of campaign funds to cover up an affair can go forward, a federal judge ruled on Thursday.

U.S. District Court Judge Catherine Eagles denied the motions of Edwards's counsel seeking to dismiss the case against him, according to a CBS News/Associated Press report.

Edwards, who has pleaded not guilty, is accused of using nearly $1 million in undisclosed payments from campaign donors to cover up his affair with Rielle Hunter.

The trial is expected to begin in January.
