Candidates
Jackie Speier (D), a former state senator, won the race with 77% of the vote and avoided a runoff.

Background Key Dates
On Dec. 4, 2007, Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) called for a special election to fill this seat following Republican Dennis Hastert's announcement that he would resign effective Nov. 26, 2007. (Almanac Profile) Primary: Feb. 5
Election: March 8
Candidates
Bill Foster (D), a scientist, won the race with 53% of the vote. He was nominated with 42% in a four-way primary.
Jim Oberweis (R), a dairy company owner, received 47% of the vote. He was nominated with 56% in a three-way primary.

Andre Carson (D), an Indianapolis city councilman, won the race with 54% of the vote. He was nominated by a party convention on Jan. 12, 2008.
Jon Elrod (R), a state representative, received 43% of the vote. He was nominated by a party convention on Jan. 13, 2008.

Candidates
Steve Scalise (R), a state senator, won the race with 75% of the vote. He was nominated with 48% of the vote in a four-way primary.
