President Obama will send a $447 billion jobs bill to Congress on Monday night, according to an administration official.
He will announce the move in a Rose Garden ceremony surrounded by teachers, firefighters, police officers, construction workers, small business owners, and veterans, the official said. Obama first announced the proposal to Congress last week.
Senate Democrats say they will quickly take up the American Jobs Act, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi asked Speaker John Boehner on Friday to push House committee chairs to “move expeditiously” to hold hearings and pass the legislation. But House Republican leaders have said they are likely to break apart the bill to vote on provisions that can pass the House more easily as they work with Senate Democrats on the other parts of the bill.
Obama will visit Ohio and North Carolina this week to discuss the jobs plan he unveiled last Thursday. He has said he will release a detailed deficit-reduction plan on Sept. 19 that will cover the cost of the bill.
