Mitt Romney's pick for the vice presidency, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., is coming out of the digital gate strong, with a new Twitter account. The new handle @PaulRyanVP launched today and immediately went viral, attracting more than 52,000 followers as of this writing.
It's already given the status of a "verified account," which appears to have been granted on an expedited basis. A spokesperson for Twitter would not comment on whether the campaign sought to have the account verified, or if it was done by Twitter, citing privacy concerns.
His first tweet reads, "I'm honored to join @MittRomney on America's Comeback Team."
Ryan last tweeted on his @RepPaulRyan account on August 5, to communicate his sympathies to the families of the victims of the shooting at the Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis.
Ryan would have had a plan B if the @PaulRyanVP handle had not been available. One user was tweeting from the account @VPPaulRyan back in January. More recently, that user wrote, "You can have this account for free when you become Vice President. I didn't want a liberal idiot to have it first."
